UP-SMART
Uganda Program for Sanitation and Market-Led Agricultural Rural Technologies (UP-SMART) is consortium project being implemented UNEDI to address sanitation in household and farm soil fertilizers deficiency among communities experiencing dire situation of extreme poverty, poor sanitation and hygiene. UPSMART fosters access to innovative technologies and energy solutions on cost –effective basis aimed at improving the lives of Ugandans.
UPSMART Overview
Launched in 2019, the Uganda program for sanitation and market-led agricultural revolutionary technologies (UP-SMART) is a project initiative of UNEDI as part of the institute’s social entrepreneurship development program dedicated to bringing communities out of a dire situation of extreme poverty, poor sanitation, and hygiene while fostering the provision and delivery of innovative solutions and technologies that enhance the quality of life and well-being of rural populations and urban poor. This is achieved by closing the gap between solution seekers and solution providers thus enabling vulnerable communities particularly the urban poor, rural farming communities, refugees, and their host communities get access to green revolution technologies and innovative solutions at a low cost-effective basis of sanitation and hygiene equipment, climate-smart farming enabling solutions to enhance
agriculture productivity and soil conservation. Specifically, UPSMART focuses on enabling rural households and urban poor to build resilience to the effects of climate change. The project empowers struggling communities with knowledge and skills to the adaption of climate-smart farming systems and the generation of clean energy, and fertilizers through the use of livestock powered Eco –Bio-digester systems for producing biogas, fertilizers, solar powered eco-stoves, and human excretion green toilets to enhance better health, well-being, and human dignity of the people. The Eco-Bio digester systems convert biodegradable plant and livestock materials into usable fuel (biogas) under an oxygen-free environment. Biogas is made up of main methane (50-90%) and carbon dioxide. The gas has several applications including cooking, lighting, heating, and drying of crops among others.

Revolutionary Solutions Changing Lives, Join UNEDI is advancing climate Smart Actions
UPSMART’s overall objective is to deliver shared prosperity and inclusively growth of the vulnerable communities in Uganda. Specifically, the project seeks to achieve the following:
- Improve sanitation and hygiene in rural communities, the urban poor, and refugees by the provision of community assets such as green toilets and ECO-Bio digester system.
- Provide an opportunity to create nearly 100,000 jobs through the promotion and supply of hygienic and sanitation green toilets and Bio-digester systems
- Improve household incomes and nutritional food security through the provision of a Dairy Cattle and Bio-digester system.
- Provide work–readiness training and household farm entrepreneurship education in climate-smart farming and green energy generation for better health and well-being of families.
- Promote environment conservation and protection through the adaption of green solutions.
The Green/dry toilet is an ecological dry toilet that works without water or electricity. The operation of the Green Toilet is based on a natural composting process in special containers, which separate the liquid waste from the solids. This separation enables the composting to start already when the toilet is in use and keeps the toilet odorless as well as pleasant to use. One Green toilet can be used about 800 times before service. When the container becomes full, it is taken out from the toilet and replaced with an empty container. This switch can be done in a matter of minutes and the use of the toilet can continue without interruptions. After some 2-5 months, when the biomass in the full container is fully decomposed – it can be used as an eco-fertilizer in a farm or a private garden. Thus, all the valuable nutrients, e.g. phosphorous and nitrogen that we all humans produce daily, are restored safely back to the soil. Using a composting toilet is a simple and safe way to handle sanitation in any place where there is no drain, electricity, or water available. These green toilets can be maintained easily without any special tools or expertise and therefore an ideal solution for both homes and public sites.
IMPORTANCE OF GREEN TOILETS
- The Green/dry Toilets technologies do not need water or electricity
- Much more affordable;
- Pleasant user experience;
- Effortless maintenance.
